    New alternative to CAPTCHA installed

    Not that it will affect any of our current users, but just so you know, I installed an additional bot/spam prevention plugin for the new user registration form.

    We've been getting spambots out the arse lately, so hopefully this will cut down on it. The question I specified (hopefully) will require the registering entity to read, understand, and follow the instructions in the question to find the answer and thus be allowed to register. Check it out by logging out and viewing the registration page if you care.

    it's not that hard to write a bot that will troll the internet looking for forums. i mean they have the Google Spider and other search engines use similar things. so you would just create a spider and then modify it to try and register on forums and post your spam.

    Yeah like Weagle says, spiders are all over the net. Always watching packets, picking up info, scanning and logging webpages, and registering on sites if they can. These things are pretty advanced, obviously advanced enough to figure out the captchas.

    But this mass registering/spamming only works when forum installations are very default. Most every vBulletin forum (the brand of forum we use) will use the default captcha installed, and once someone figures out how to make a bot read it, it can then go and register on ANY forum using that captcha. This is why having custom modifications, like the new thing I just added, are a must to break the bots' ability to automatically register.

    TBH, I should have done this a long time ago.
